You can still update your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 version to Windows 10 for FREE

Here is how you can upgrade your Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro PC/laptop to Windows 10 for FREE

While I advise against it, the offer from Microsoft to upgrade your Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro computer or laptop is still alive and kicking. Microsoft had offered the Windows 7/8 and Windows 8.1 users three months to update their PCs/laptops to Windows 10 when it was released. Most such users (I didn’t because I love Windows 7) used the opportunity to update their PC/laptops to Windows 10. This was in July 2015 and the three months ended in October 2015.

But for some reason, Microsoft has not switched off the offer of free upgrade yet. Yes! you can still upgrade your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PC/laptop to Windows 10 for FREE if you want to. Let me clarify that upgrading your Windows 7/8.1 to Windows 10 might be a good thing from the security point of view. Microsoft has officially ended supporting all versions of Windows 7 including releasing patches since Jan 2020.

Considering the fact that every other day something is hacked or breached, it would be worthwhile to think about upgrading your PC/laptop to Windows 10. At least you will be better protected from sophisticated malware and rootkits. Windows 10 has its own bit of problems like intrusive software, telemetry, unsolicited and unwanted updates, longish booting time. But security-wise, Windows 10 is way good than Windows 7 or 8.1 operating system.

How to upgrade your Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro PC/laptop to Windows 10?

Before you begin, take a backup of all your important files, videos, images and other things. Make a note of the Apps that you require. Make sure to backup all your files to an external hard drive or in cloud storage. Create on services like Mega for this purpose and delete it when your upgrade is done and things return to normal.

Second, disconnect all your external devices like Printers, USB flash drives etc. Remember, you can only upgrade if your PC/laptop is running a licensed copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro.

Now follow these steps:

  • STEP 1: Visit the Microsoft Windows 10 Official website to download Windows 10
  • STEP 2: Click on Create Windows 10 installation media > Download tool now > Run
  • STEP 3: Select Upgrade this PC now and follow directions on screens that follow
  • STEP 4: Check whether your new Windows 10 license key is activated by visiting Settings > Update & Security > Activation. It should show as Windows is activated with a digital license.

In Windows 10 you don’t get a Windows activation key if you upgrade to or purchase a Windows 10 PC/laptop. In most cases, Windows 10 activates automatically using a digital license and doesn’t require you to enter a product key.
