The United States Air Force just awarded a $35,000,000 contract to Wickr for providing end-to-end encrypted file, video, chat, text and voice services
The wait has ended for Wickr. It is now the official provider of encrypted messaging, video, chat, text, voice calls and file forwarding services to the largest airforce in the world. The Department of Defense contract announcements for 1 June 2020 announced an award of the providing end-to-end encrypted file, video, chat, text and voice services for the United States Air Force to Wickr RAM.
The contract has been in news since April 2020 but it was awarded in June by the DoD. Wickr will develop a self-hosted instance of Wickr for the USAF which will be known as Wickr RAM. Wickr RAM is a self-hosted end-to-end encrypted collaboration platform deployed to address the requirements to serve Recall, Alert, and Messaging needs.
Wickr says that Wickr RAM is a highly scalable version of Wickr Enterprise with full administrative and compliance controls enabled to meet Department of Defense (DOD) security requirements while providing an easy to use solution for zero trust, encrypted messaging, audio and video calling with screen share, large file transfers, and secure storage. All features use the exact same encryption, which is compliant with For Official Use Only (FOUO) document designation, PII, and higher levels of security.
This is also great news for the United States Air Force as it will get an integrated encrypted file transfer, messaging, and video. Here is a statement from DoD announcing the deal:
Wickr Inc., San Francisco, California, has been awarded a ceiling $35,000,000 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for Wickr-based recall, alert and messaging (Wickr RAM) services. Wickr RAM services require an Air Force Cloud One and Air Force Special Operations Command cloud certified fully managed service provider. This contract provides Wickr RAM is a Department of Defense (DOD)-approved/Federal Information Processing Standards certified application suite that provides end-to-end encrypted file, video, chat, text and voice services for end-users. The application suite includes servers that run in a DOD-approved cloud data center and client applications that run on government issued, personal and temporary computers and mobile devices. Work will be performed at the contractor’s facility and is expected to be completed May 31, 2022. Fiscal 2020 operations and maintenance funds in the amount of $7,700,000 are being obligated at the time of award. Air Force Installation Contracting Center, Hurlburt Field, Florida, is the contracting activity (FA0021-20-D-0001).
Another thing to note here for small developers is that you don’t need to be an Amazon, Google, or Microsoft to win US Government contracts. If you have the capability and follow it through with honest work, you will definitely find yourself at the end of the rainbow. Wickr has been popular but is struggling to find a foothold in an area that is littered with thousands of Apps. This will help Wickr scale-up their Wickr Pro app to provide even better services.
