Qualcomm’s new Quick Charge 5 to be available for Snapdragon 865 SoCs, claims to recharge 0 to 50% battery in just 5 Minutes
Wouldn’t it be fun to get your smartphone from zero battery to a 50% charge in just 5 minutes? Qualcomm’s new Quick Charge 5 promises to do just that. Qualcomm today announced its proprietary Quick Charge 5 charging solution that promises 0 to 50 percent battery with just 5 minutes of recharge.
Announcing the Quick Charge 5.0, Qualcomm said that the new charging solution will be available on its latest Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 865 Plus processors. Other SoCs will also get the Quick Charge 5 feature in the future says Qualcomm press release.
Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 features
First, the big boasts; Qualcomm says that Quick Charge 5 is the world’s fastest commercial charging solution and the world’s first commercial 100W+ charging platform. According to Qualcomm, Quick Charge 5 can charge a 4,500 mAh battery from 0 to 50 percent battery power in just five minutes, representing the fastest mobile phone charging capabilities available.
Quick Charge 5 uses Qualcomm Battery Saver and the new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology for efficiency and extends the battery life cycle on a users’ smartphone/tablet. Qualcomm adds that Quick Charge is 70 percent more efficient than Quick Charge 4 and offers 10 times the power delivery of Quick Charge 1. (Qualcomm’s boast is based on internal tests charging a 4500mAh fast charge battery (1.5C charge rate) and using the maximum power for a thermal limit of 40C for all charging implementations. Charge time based on 0%-50%.)
Quick Charge 5 incorporates 12 separate voltage, current and temperature protections, including USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V and external power controls beyond 30V. It also runs 10 degrees Celsius cooler than Quick Charge 4. Quick Charge 5 enables Dual/Triple Charge technology, adaptive input voltage, INOV4, Qualcomm Battery Saver and the new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology, which work together to maximize power transfer efficiency, increase safety and help extend the battery life cycle on a users’ device.
Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5 supports 100W+ charging power and comes with better thermal management.
Quick Charge 5 optimized for USB Type-C charging
With more and more smartphone manufacturers moving towards Type-C ports, Qualcomm says that Quick Charge 5 is fully optimized for USB-PD and USB Type-C. Most high-end Android smartphones/tablets feature Snapdragon SoCs and Quick Charge will be made available to them says Qualcomm.
Xiaomi could be the first one to offer Quick Charge 5 to its users. Xiaomi vice president, Zhang Lei says, “Xiaomi has always been committed to proactively driving the adoption of new technologies and accelerating the fulfillment of enhanced experiences. In the future, more Xiaomi users will be able to enjoy high-speed, safe, and superior charging experiences enabled by Quick Charge 5.”
