As soon as the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted about the opening of 750 MW Rewa Solar Project, the opposition parties claimed it is not one of the largest solar projects in India. They claim the 2000 MW Pavagada solar park situated in Karnataka is the biggest solar project in Asia.
In this article, we look at what is true? In this article we only present facts, it is up to you to judge which one is bigger.
750 MW Rewa Solar Project in Madhya Pradesh vs 2000 MW Pavagada Solar Park in Karnataka
On the onset, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi never claimed the 750 MW Rewa solar project in Madhya Pradesh was the biggest solar project in Asia. Some pro-government Twitter handles claimed this to be the case.
According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, this Solar Power project in Rewa consists of three solar power generating units, each having a capacity of 250 MW and each located on a 500-hectare plot of land, which is situated inside a Solar Park.
The 750 MW Rewa Solar Project consists of three solar generating units of 250 MW each located on a 500-hectare plot of land inside the solar park. The Rewa Solar Project is the first in India to break the grid parity barrier. It is expected to reduce carbon emission equivalent to 15 lakh tons of CO2 per year. World Bank Group President has also awarded the project for innovation and excellence.
The operator. Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Ltd. (RUMS) on its website says that, “once completed in 2018, it would become one of the largest single-site solar power plant in India and the world.” The entire conflict of opinion seems to stem from these wording used by RUMS. As per the project, in 2018, Rewa would have been the largest single-site solar plant. Now, it is 2020 and we have two top contenders for the top spot and both are from India. The controversy about Asia’s top solar project stems from the RUMS website’s verbatim report about Rewa being one of the largest solar projects in India.
According to Wikipedia, the largest solar power project in the world Bhadla Solar Park with a capacity of 2,245 MW. The Pavagada Solar Park comes in second with 2000 MW and Rewa is 12th with 750 MW. So no, Rewa is not the largest solar project in the world or Asia.
However, Rewa Solar Project has several firsts to its name. Rewa Ultra Mega Solar is the first solar project in the country to break the grid parity barrier. This has been the first project in India with rates of solar power below those of coal-based power, which is presently around Rs 4.50/unit and is expected to increase over the years. Rewa is the first project in India to power the Delhi Metro. This is also the first project in India where solar power would be used for railway traction. Rewa Solar plant is India’s first solar project to get funding from the World Bank’s Clean Technology Fund (CTF).
