Here is what owning a Computer just like Linux founder Linus Torvalds will cost you

This is what it would cost you to have the same AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 32-core powered PC like Linux founder Linus Torvald’s rig

In a freewheeling interview with Dirk Hondell of VMware, Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel, said that he now used an AMD processor-powered computer. We know Torvalds earlier used a PC with an Intel Core i9-9900k processor but now he has decidedly changed his rig to an AMD powered one.

Most programmers would love to know more about the PC Torvalds uses for coding(though he says he doesn’t code anymore) as he single-handedly took on the might of Microsoft and its closed Windows operating system by developing the open-source Linux operating system.

In the interview, Torvalds confirmed he now uses AMD, specifically an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 32-core, 64-wire, with a speed of 3.7 GHz and a turbo mode at 4.5 GHz powered PC. The 3970x 32-core processor providing the incredible 64 threads of simultaneous multithreading power. It also has 144 MB of combined cache.

In this article, we will take a look at what it would cost you to own a similar PC as the father of Linux. Here are the details of how much would it cost you to own the same equipment that Linus Torvalds uses.

For the purpose of this article, we are only taking PC component prices from Amazon for price comparison. Users may opt for cheaper e-commerce platforms offering cheaper PC components. We have considered Amazon’s list price for the PC components and extra delivery charges may be incurred.

Torvalds explains that he doesn’t care much about graphics cards and video accessories as coding doesn’t involve these components. If you are into gaming or videos, you should consider a better graphics card. Even if you opt for the above system, this AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X with 16GB DDR4 RAM rig is capable of compiling the entire core of the operating system in just over 3 minutes based on LinusTechTips measurements.
