We had alerted readers about the fraud called Mitron App last week. Finally, Google has heeded to the requests of thousands of users and pulled down the Mitron App from Google Play Store.
Mitron App climbed to the popularity charts within a blink of a eyelid thanks to masterful packaging and advertising. The App was marketed as a viable TikTok alternative thanks to the derision among Indian users for TikTok due to its frail content policies and weak moderation. Also, Mitron App was hyped as an App developed by an Indian student from IIT Kanpur. But it was actually a cheap clone of a cheaper Pakistani App called TikTik.
Mitron App looked to cash in on the only local narrative pushed forward by the Government of India after the disastrous coronavirus pandemic. After Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s call to the nation to use only local products to help kickstart the economy, the vocal for local campaign gained momentum. Many developers joined the bandwagon to profit from anti-Chinese sentiments among Indian users. Mitron was one of them.
Now, Google has decided to act and removed the Mitron App from the Google Play store for violating its ‘spam and minimum functionality’ policy. Google’s policy states that copying content from other apps without making any original changes or adding value to it is a violation.
“We don’t allow apps that merely provide the same experience as other apps already on Google Play. Apps should provide value to users through the creation of unique content or services,”
Google Play Store
If you want to still be a part of the Vocal for Local campaign you can remove Chinese Apps using this Chinese Apps Remover tool.
