Windows 10 Game Mode Bug causes performance issues in some games like Call of Duty: Warzone, League of Legends, and Destiny 2

If you have been playing top games like Call of Duty: Warzone on your Windows 10 PC/laptop, you would have noticed lags, stutters, FPS drops, and performance issues. No there is not any problem in your games. Rather the issue is due to a bug in Windows 10’s Game Mode.

The Windows 10 bug affects the Games Mode and changes settings of both AMD and Nvidia GPUs and for a number of the world’s most popular video games. These include games like Call of Duty: Warzone (50M players), League of Legends (80M players), and Destiny 2 (65M players).

Gamers took to social media to vent their problems with playing games on Windows 10 game mode. Some gamers took to Reddit and reported huge lags and dropped FPS while playing the above games. Other gamers noted that their computer with both Nvidia and AMD configurations have been affected.

One user noted that the Windows 10 Game Mode bug effects GPUs like Radeon RX 5700 XT, RX 480, R9 290, and other AMD models. Others who have Nvidia GPUs such as GTX 980 and GTX 1080 Ti GPUs also reported issues with playing games in Windows 10 game mode.

“[Turning off Game Mode] totally just fixed all the crazy stuttering I was getting in Destiny 2! The game would basically freeze for 70ms whenever I got into an engagement in the crucible. Now it’s rock-solid,” a user noted.

It’s not clear how the Windows 10 Game Mode bug causing the issue, but an employee working for AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group told redditors that their engineers will investigate the problem.

Windows 10 game mode bug fix?

The simple fix involves turning the Game Mode OFF. If you are impacted, you can find Game Mode by searching from the Start Menu or going to

Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and toggling it to OFF

Microsoft knows about the issue and will be releasing a fix for the bug in the Windows 10 May 2020 mega update. The Windows 10 bug seems to affect only Game Mode; watching movies doesn’t cause any problems.
